Strong earthquake rattles South Asia
News Update,KABUL - An
earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude struck South Asia on Sunday (10/04/2016).
The quake caused buildings in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India vibrate. Even so,
there are no related reports of damage or casualties.
According to the U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was centered about 40 km (25 miles) west of
Ashkasham in northeast Afghanistan near the border with Tajikistan, as quoted
by Reuters.
Residents fled their
homes in Kabul and Islamabad when the earthquake struck. Some buildings swayed
for more than a minute in the second capital. Similar reports were received
from all parts of northern and central Pakistan.
People in the Pakistani
city of Lahore, 630 km from the epicenter, also reported feeling the
vibrations. A witness told Reuters in Chitral strong earthquake but no major
damage visible. Tremor was also felt in the Indian capital and in Kashmir,
where people ran out of the building. Subway system was also halted semebentar.
Hindu Kush region
bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan is seismically active, with frequent
earthquakes felt across the region. Just over a decade ago, an earthquake of
7.6 on the Richter scale in other parts of northern Pakistan, killing about
